In a recent development regarding the proposed RM1.5 billion water supply project in Sabah, State Secretary Datuk Seri Panglima Nizam Salleh has strongly refuted allegations made by opposition leader Datuk Junz Wong.
Government's Response
Nizam categorically denied the existence of any agreement for the water supply project, labeling Wong's claims as "fake news." He emphasized that the project is still in its preliminary stages, with only a Letter of Intent (LOI) issued for a feasibility study.
"The LOI is merely an expression of interest to explore the project's viability," Nizam stated. "It does not constitute a binding agreement or commitment from the state government."
Project Status and Financing
Addressing concerns about project financing, Nizam clarified that the potential involvement of Sabah Credit Corporation (SCC) is purely speculative at this point. He stressed that SCC has not been officially appointed as the financier for the Private Finance Initiative (PFI).
"Any decision on financing would require approval from the previous government, which has not been obtained," Nizam explained.
"Solid Documents"
The State Secretary challenged Wong to present the "solid documents" he claims to possess, urging verification of their authenticity. Nizam accused Wong of making malicious statements intended to mislead the public.
Opposition's Stance
Wong, who initially raised concerns about the project in the Sabah State Assembly, has maintained his position. He argues that the documents in his possession reveal a lack of transparency in the project's planning and potential irregularities in the selection of contractors.
Moving Forward
This ongoing debate highlights the importance of clear communication and transparency in large-scale public infrastructure projects, especially those with significant financial implications for the state.
